Billy Godleman

A teenage prodigy, Billy Godleman's career unfortunately stalled even as he shifted from counties to counties in search of cricket at the highest level. At 17, Godleman was offered a contract with Middlesex - and he became the second-youngest ever player to feature in the county's first XI - upon making his full-fledged first-class debut against Cambridge University, in 2005.

Godleman was identified by David English as an upcoming prodigious talent and featured in England's various school teams - this paved way for a chance with the second XI of Middlesex - where he impressed with a string of hundreds. Godleman impressed during his formative years with Middlesex and was also a part of England's Under-19 World Cup squad for the 2008 tournament.

However, his form tapered off and Godleman shifted across from the comforts of Lords to Chelmsford, the cradle of Essex cricket in 2009. It turned out to be a disappointing turnover as Godleman struggled for form and was making news more for off-field behavior - even earning a caution after damaging the dressing room, following his dismissal in a second XI match. Three frustrating years followed before Essex finally let him go in 2012.

Derbyshire turned out to be his third county and the start of his new experience wasn't so great, with Godleman struggling to find that consistent form which had kept dogging him - while denying him a chance at future honours. It led to frustrations within the Derbyshire camp and he was dropped from the first XI. It was finally in 2015 that Godleman showed the form that made England sit up and take note of the young prodigy.

Over 1,000 runs in the County championships meant he was back in the fold as a first choice player and led to calls for a place in England's development squad. That sadly didn't come along although he replaced Wayne Madsen as Derbyshire captain in 2016. It was the start of a tumultuous period as Derbyshire sank to rock bottom - finishing last in Division Two.
